Celebrating Designers in Honor of Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate these influential designers who have through their creations made an impact not only in the design industry but also in our society. These designers have contributed groundbreaking work throughout the years in many forms such as advertisements, album covers, marketing collateral and even Census forms.

Georg Olden: The Trailblazer Designer

Georg Olden greatly influenced the field of broadcast graphics during the “dawn of television”. Working under CBS’s Creative Director, William Golden, he oversaw the visual identities of shows such as I Love Lucy and Lassie and Gunsmoke. Olden also sold cartoons to The New Yorker, purposely dropping the ‘e’ off of his birth name, George, in order to capture the editor’s attention which he then kept throughout the years. One of the many notable works he created was the postage stamp design for the 100th anniversary of Emancipation Proclamation making him the first African American to design a postage stamp that was also presented to President Kennedy at the White House.

Sylvia Harris: The Citizen Designer

Sylvia Harris has used intelligent strategy and flawless design to communicate ideal functionality for both the end user and the companies she’s worked with. Sylvia gained an interest in taking complex information systems and recreating them to improve the user experience. Harris has worked with Citibank to help establish an industry standard for digitally based consumer banking systems. Working with the United States Census Bureau, she was challenged to improve participation among Americans in completing the form. Harris capitalized on this opportunity to learn how a new design can impact participation and solidify branding for the Census Bureau.

Leroy Winbush: The Pioneer and Entrepreneur

Shown Above: Materials created for the Black Expo, which was considered to be at the time the largest gathering of black businessmen in history (photo courtesy of AIGA.org)

Shown Above: Variety of album cover designs (photo courtesy of AIGA.org)

Winbush started his career right out of high school, learning from the South Side sign painters in Chicago which lead to a job designing signage for the Regal Theatre where he met famous performers like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. In 1945, he established his own design firm in 1945. He was considered a jack of all trades who despite never having any formal design training taught classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago. Winbush was also a strong advocate and used his design work to help the black community. He has designed exhibitions for the DuSable Museum of African-American History on subjects such as the Underground Railroad.

Emmett McBain: The Influential Advertiser

Shown Above: Playboy Jazz All Stars Album Cover, 1957 (photo courtesy of AIGA.org)

Shown Above: Marlboro Advertisement, 1972 (photo courtesy of AIGA.org)

McBain was a determined socially conscious designer who gave a new voice to advertisers and the black community.  At 12 years old, Emmett started taking classes at the Art Institute of Chicago during the summer and then continued on to attend Ray Vogue School of Commercial Art, American Academy of Art and the IIT Institute of Design. By the age of 24, Emmett had his own design firm and had created over 75 album covers for artists such as Tony Martin, Max Roach, and Sarah Vaughan. He then went on to help launch the Ford Mustang at the World’s Fair with a dealer promotion campaign. Some of his most famous work has been in the tobacco industry with groundbreaking ads for Marlboro and Newport.

Happy Birthday Ashley!

We’re celebrating another February birthday today at Vision Creative Group! We wish a very happy birthday to our own designer and photographer, Ashley! Here are a few fun facts about the birthday girl:

WHAT IS YOUR OFFICIAL TITLE?

Senior Graphic Designer

WHAT’S A DAY IN THE OFFICE LIKE FOR YOU?

Designing things like print ads, displays and graphics for our clients.

DO YOU HAVE A HOBBY?

I have been getting into photography and have been taking classes online to better my skills. I recently lit some flowers on fire to photograph them and I loved the way they came out.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT VISION?

Just under 2 and a half years.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE VCG MOMENT OR MEMORY?

When I started, I was only here a few weeks before we all went to the Far Hills Race (aka The Hunt). The weather was good, the food was great and it was a fun way to hang out and get to know all of my new coworkers. I also loved making our mannequin challenge video.

FAVORITE ITEM(S) ON YOUR DESK/IN YOUR OFFICE:

Pictures of my family & a finger painting my son made.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST IN 2018?

Hanging out with my husband and son (who is now 8 months old) and seeing all the milestones he will hit and new things he will experience.

Happy Birthday, Angela!

Whether it’s whipping up new recipes or finding a new polka dotted item to add to her wardrobe, our very own resident pastry chef is celebrating her birthday this week! We stopped by the birthday girl’s office and asked her a few questions:

WHAT IS YOUR OFFICIAL TITLE?

Account Executive (unofficial title: Vision Pastry Chef)

WHAT KIND OF ACCOUNTS DO YOU WORK ON?

All kinds! Real estate, private clubs and foodie-related clients to name a few. Managing the web projects allows me to be involved with accounts ranging from cheese brands to education to toys and more!

WHAT’S A DAY IN THE LIFE FOR YOU LIKE?

Usually starts with coffee or ice water and then emails, reviewing web projects and writing/editing content for clients. If I’m lucky, I get to scope out food photography and write recipes, too!

DO YOU HAVE A HOBBY?

Cooking! …and finding the perfect polka dotted items to integrate into my wardrobe.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT VISION?

3.25 years next week ????

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE VCG MOMENT OR MEMORY?

Personally, it would probably have to be the first time a recipe I wrote for one of our clients was published.
With the whole company… celebrating VCG’s 30th anniversary this past September! It was a such a fun milestone to be a part of to celebrate everything Andy and Sharon have done since Vision started in 1987.

FAVORITE ITEM(S) ON YOUR DESK/IN YOUR OFFICE:

In my office: The awesome 12-cube bookshelf I put together when we moved to our new location
On my desk: Polka-dotted boxes (that are occasionally filled with mini chocolates!)

Podcasts: The Who, The What, and The Why

With the age of podcasts booming at an exponential rate, there are many great benefits to being both a listener and an advertiser. Podcasts are a great way to learn about any subject matter of your choosing. You can be entertained by your favorite comedians and catch the latest news all while simply listening. Not only is there a huge selection of content to choose from, but you can listen anywhere and anytime! Listen, learn and laugh on your way to work, while at the gym, or traveling.

Podcasts are not just an excellent source of media, but they are continuing to grow as an advertising platform. Advertising revenue has grown over the last 3 years from $69M in 2015 to a projected $220M in 2017. As the number of listeners is on the rise, so is the growth of your potential customer base.

The team at Vision Creative Group loves a good podcast! Some of our favorites include: Stuff You Should KnowThe #AskGaryVee Show, and This American Life. What are you currently listening to?

Happy birthday, Jenn!

Whether it’s with some Dunkin’ or a new pair of heels, our resident fashionista will be celebrating this weekend and we couldn’t let her get out of an interview, even if her official birthday falls on a Saturday. We stole a few minutes to chat with her before she started her birthday weekend to chat about her tenure at VCG, her tweetable resume and tough decisions.

What’s your official title?

Senior Account Executive

What type of accounts do you work on?

Oh, a whole bunch. I work on consumer electronics, pharmaceutical, non-profit accounts and retail.

What’s a day in the life like for you?

None of them are the same. (Although they do always start with some coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts)

How long have been with VCG?

11 years…(wow) I know!

Do you have a hobby?

Shoe collecting and soccer mom-ing.

What’s your favorite memory?

Probably when we got to take our kids trick-or-treating around the office after a hurricane. Halloween had basically been cancelled that year, so it was nice that we could bring the kids in to celebrate.

If you had to choose: free Dunkin’ for life or ANY five pairs of shoes in the world?

Oh no! Free Dunkin’ for LIFE? Or any five pairs of shoes in the WORLD? Oh… I think I definitely have to take the shoes. Although I love coffee almost as much as I love shoes!

What’s your favorite thing in your office?

The picture of Ryan I have up there that Michael (one of our creative directors) took.

Here’s a fun one: give us your resume in 140 characters or less:

Senior Account Executive – Soccer mom – Dance teacher – Crafter – Lego Master – Shoe enthusiast – coffee drinker – Champion label fixer

Enjoy your birthday weekend, Jenn!

adobe-premiere-pro-cc

Great things are happening in video editing.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC released a new update(April 2017) filled with an arsenal of new features.

Already considered by many to be the “nonlinear industry standard”, Premiere continues to make editing videos more efficient and creative.

type-tool-premiere-pro

First, adding type to your video used to involve multiple, time-consuming steps. Now there is a type tool built right in the toolbox offering lots of choices and flexibility. You can also now create shapes and animate them on a time line as well.

Second, there is a new graphics feature called “essential graphics” allowing you to compose shapes, type and graphics on multiple layers within one element. This gives you better organization on your timeline.

Next are the “Motion Graphics Templates”. These are great because you can import pre-existing templates and modify it’s type, colors and actions right within Premiere.

Finally, an improved audio set up gives you many more options to modify and enhance voice and music tracks. This is found in a panel called “Essential Sound”.

Adobe’s pro video editing software makes it easy to work with footage, audio and other graphics thanks to all the new updates. Take advantage of these features in your next video, commercial or web banner.

Happy (early) Birthday, Kim!

We’re up to our third April office birthday (and there is still more to come). However, this particular birthday belongs to the woman whose face you see first when you enter the office and the voice you hear when you call Vision. We stole a few minutes of her time to talk about her tenure at VCG, travel and birthday celebrations!

We’ll start easy. What’s your official title?

Admin…Office Manager…. sure, let’s go with Office Manager.

What’s a day in the office like for you?

Everyday is different and that’s what makes it fun!

Favorite place to travel:

(I’ll find out on my trip!) So far, somewhere warm with a nice beach.

How long have you been at Vision?

My anniversary is May 4th and that will be 13 years. (Wow!)

Do you have a hobby?

(whispers) I oil paint. Not a lot of people know that. (They will now!)

Where are you going on your upcoming trip?

The Netherlands and Italy.

What are you looking forward to most?

Wine…is that acceptable? (She chuckled.) Oh, tulips! I’m spending three days in Amsterdam and keep saying, “It’s so nice they’re having a parade for my birthday!”

Favorite VCG moment/memory:

Oh! When a prankster in the office completely wrapped a car in the parking lot in plastic wrap.

Favorite item(s) on your desk/in your office:

My smile on a stick! (It was a tough choice – she’s got photos and post cards and fun foreign pens, too!)

Happy birthday, Kim!!!

Happy (belated) Birthday, Katie!

As one of the newest members to the Vision team, we didn’t bother Katie on her actual birthday…but a day late isn’t so bad…right? We sat down with the bubbly (newly turned) 24 year-old to talk about travel, life before Vision and what’s coming up next.

First things first, what’s your title?

Graphic Designer

What kind of accounts do you work on?

(She chuckled.) Everything and anything. I’ve dabbled in cheese, pharmaceutical and even touched the whiskey business!

What are your favorite types of projects to work on?

Branding stuff. So concepts, I guess. More creative, because you kind of get to do whatever you want.

You’re relatively new to Vision. What were you doing before you joined us here?

I was working at Applegate, the natural and organic meat company. I was a graphic designer there as well.

Do you have a hobby?

I taught myself to play guitar about four years ago and I bartend on the weekends. So yeah, basically that!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Oh that’s hard. I think South America. I’d like to go there because it seems like it would be different than where I’ve gone already. I’ve been to Europe twice (Greece and Austria), and I’ve also been to Mexico nine times.

Tell us your favorite quote.

“To live will be an awfully big adventure.” – as said by Robin Williams in Hook.

We were going to ask if you had a favorite item on your desk, but there’s not a lot here. Do you have a favorite item?

Yeah there’s not a lot on my desk, but last year for Christmas I got a green beach cruiser bike. All it needs is a bell, but it’s fancy. I love it.

And last but not least, what are you looking forward to most in 2017?

We’re planning a trip to California. It should be fun, I’ve never been west of Pennsylvania (within in the United States).

We’re glad we could steal a few minutes with you. Sorry for the delay, but we’re glad you enjoyed your birthday!

Happy Birthday, Tom!

Today marks the last of what has been a birthday-filled February here in the Vision office. Although he is immersed in language on a daily basis, Tom is (ironically) a man of few words… at least when prodded with questions about himself. 🙂 However, despite a busy schedule and a tad of resistance, we managed to snag a few minutes with our resident world-traveler for an interview on his birthday.

What’s your title?

Production Manager

So at VCG, what does that mean?

Proofreading, creating print specs and getting estimates, copywriting, tracking jobs, brainstorming…

What kind of projects do you like to proof?

Interesting subject matter where you learn something new is always good.

Favorite place to travel:

Spain

Do you have a hobby?

Running.

Your bio on the Vision site says you got into advertising as a translator. How many languages do you speak?

French and Spanish.

Which do you prefer: proofreading or copywriting?

I like both.

Are you pro or against the Oxford comma?

Against… but I will enforce it when necessary.

Tell us your favorite item(s) on your desk:

My maneki-neko (beckoning cat)!

Thanks for letting us interrupt your day, Tom. Hope you enjoyed your birthday!

Happy Birthday, Ashley!

Our second of three February birthdays here in the office was technically yesterday, but we’re pretending it’s today! Before this designer adds ‘mom’ to her resume this summer, we thought we’d ask her a few questions while keeping her birthday celebration going!

What’s your title?

Senior Graphic Designer

Tell us what kind of accounts you work on.

Mostly the same four, but they’re relatively different. Two kind of food-based clients, a pharmaceutical product and a paint company.

Describe a typical day for you.

Design. Design. Design.

What are your favorite types of projects?

I like concepting when it’s not really confined – when it’s more whatever comes to mind. Oh, and building renderings in Photoshop. I don’t know why, but I think it’s neat to put stuff together so you have something to look at that’s better than flat.

Do you have a hobby?

Photography.

Name one thing you really like about your job:

Other places I’ve worked have been very restricted but it’s very open here. It’s nice to be able to be more creative.

How would you spend a snow day?

Playing video games, watching horrible TV and cleaning. Yeah, I think those would be my main three.

What are you looking forward to most in 2017?

Having a baby!

Tell us your favorite item(s) on your desk:

Hmm. I have a ‘Beware of Attack Artist’ sign on my desk. Probably that and the pictures of my family.

Thanks for sitting down with us, Ashley!
